I would like to know what a Carman was in the 1870-80's as this has come up on a person in my family tree.

Hi Pauline,
Driver of a horse drawn vehicle for transporting goods.
Carmen were often employed by railway companies for local deliveries and collections of goods and parcels.
Also someone who drove a horse drawn tram was called a Carman.
Hope this helps clear up your family tree query.
Regards,
Roy.
