Sheila Hilton was born Sheila King at Lancing in 1946 and has lived in Lancing and Sompting all her life. She went to South Lancing infant and junior school, followed by the Irene Avenue Secondary School.

As soon as the new secondary school had been built in Boundstone Lane she completed her education there. On leaving school she had numerous jobs in the locality, at Worthing and Shoreham as well as Lancing.

When I was around thirteen years old I had three friends Christine, Katherine Osborne who lived at North Lancing, and Susan Muirhead who lived at First Avenue.

We were all crazy about Cliff Richard and I will always remember the great excitement one Saturday morning when we knew he was appearing on Saturday Club on the radio.

We had all sent in requests to the show and on the morning in question were all listening to the show in our homes with bated breath to see if any of our requests came up.

Can you imagine, as the show was coming to a close and Cliff had sung loads of his songs, to our delight, but also our disappointment that none of our cards had come up, that it came to the moment where he picked out a card for the last of his songs .....

...... and it was mine!!

My moment of fame had arrived. Cliff Richard had actually spoken my name and those of my friends.

Monday at school was like no other Monday. We were famous, or so it seemed. I always think of how much pleasure it gave to a few giddy girls.

Christine moved away but Katherine and Susan were around for several years before I lost contact with them.

Now I am a granny with two boys of my own and three granddaughters, and a grandson who will soon be the age that I was when Cliff Richard uttered my name.
